The process leading to the making of the film-installation Les Avatars de Vénus goes back thirty years to the thousands of images I began picking up - from news stands, bookshops, libraries, museums, flea markets as I travelled around the world, drawing, photographing, analyzing, filming and remembering what I saw. Finally, I collected a giant image–bank of different incarnations of Venus spreading across time and space, coming from all continents, all civilizations, all epochs, respecting the logic of each one of them, regardless of the arbitrary ideological hierarchy established by academicians between High Art and Low Art. I chose to mix art history and popular imagery, Renaissance iconography and commercial advertisements, religious propaganda and common pornographic icons, movie stars and classical as well as non-occidental sculpture, all fetishes being complementary.

In the summer of 1986, Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub were working in the park of an old Sicilian mansion and in a clearing at the foot of Mount Etna shooting Der Tod des Empedokles. Assistant cameraman Jean-Paul Toraille toyed around, so to speak, with his first video camera, filming the daily work on the set. Now, 24 years later, he was joined by Jean-Marie Straub in editing the material into a film. Anyone who expected the shooting of Les Avatars de la mort d’Empédocle to be an austere affair, an exercise entirely devoid of humour or a Straubian tour de force is proven wrong: so much lightness, joy, concentration, spells of waiting for the sun to come out – and even proper slapstick in between – is hard to find.

Originally created for the Darklight Festival's '4 Day Movie' project, Avatar Days is a portrait of four online gamers in Dublin whose daily lives contrast with their virtual identities. BLUES FOR THE AVATAR is a comedy about two oddball characters, a man Cheyenne, and a woman, Mary Jane, caught in the circumstances of being unwanted guests in other people's lives. His propensity for women has landed him in the middle of a horrendous breakup, while her quest for self-discovery leads her into what might be direct contact with an avatar ('...a spiritual being sent to earth to teach us enlightenment'). Their friends appear throughout the film, offering real-life stories of irony, outrageousness, and late 20th century angst.

In this two-chapter project I piece together the progression of my HRT process, using voice documentation and virtual scenarios to recognize physical and psychological changes.
